Honeybuns Big Dig Day

Big Dig 1

We’re still feeling warm inside following our fabulous ‘Big Dig’ tree planting day last weekend.

We were recently successful in our application for the Woodland Trust Community Tree Pack and needed help to plant our pack of approx. 420 baby trees, to be planted here in our fledging nature reserve.

With over 50 volunteers’ and Honeybuns team members’ enthusiastic spade work, 420 young trees were planted, staked and kitted out with protectors.

It was quite nippy in the morning, but after a couple of hours out in the front field, happy diggers filtered through to the Bee Shack Café all a glow.

Honeybuns had hoped that maybe 50 trees would be planted but to see all the trees dug in by early afternoon was fantastic. The trees are native, wildlife friendly varieties which will look established in 7-8 years.

Lunch was a hearty lentil and roast squash soup with courgette and parmesan cornbread, followed by roast plum crumble. All food was gluten free and veggie and judging by empty plates it was quite tasty.

All diggers will receive their own certificate and they will have their chosen tree labelled with their chosen personal message.

It was great to meet so many willing helpers to eavesdrop on lively conversations and generally soak up the goodwill and love from the day.

Huge thanks to everyone involved and we look forward to welcoming you on future ‘Tree Hug’ days in 2015. We’ll announce these on the Honeybuns Homepage. We’re also wondering about an annual November BeeGreen day. We could tackle some hedge laying or bulb planting?

You can see our album of photos from the day here.
