Recycling and Composting at Honeybuns

Compressing machine

At Honeybuns we’ve been on a mission to increase our recyling and composting activity. By stepping up our onsite composting we are now very nearly zero to landfill. This means all of our bakery waste is either recycled or composted leaving just a tiny bit of waste from our office. We’re working on this!

We invested in an utterly brilliant compressing machine. We can load it with plastics, cardboard and anything else that can be recycled, and it turns them into 2’x1’x1′ small bales. It’s amazing seeing all the materials going in and the machine compresses them down to this small cube.

We then use a local recycling service who collect our baled paper, cardboard and plastic. The cardboard is distributed to paper mills, and plastic is reprocessed.

Our aluminium foil trays are cleaned and sent for recycling.

All the ingredient buckets get recycled

Egg trays go back to the manufacturer.

The card used for our cake boards is from a sustainable source, and we use vegetable based dyes. The film used to wrap the cakes is biodegradable.

We used this excellent Youtube link to help us build our own DIY co
posting bays from old wooden pallets.
