Wild Bird Treats

At Honeybuns we often have ingredients which, for one reason or another, can’t be used in the bakery. They might be too close to a sell by date or they might have been slightly damaged in transit.

Happily, such wastage can be given to our thriving bird community. Being treated to Spanish nibbed almonds, pistachio, cranberries & raisins, they must be rubbing their wings together in anticipation when they spot the delivery truck trundling up the drive.

Bird friendly ingredients we have successfully tried:

nibbed almonds

sunflower seeds

oats (gluten free natch!)

pumpkin seeds

linseed

raisins/sultanas

cranberries

cake crumb

We use any of the above and mix in some wild bird seeds as well. We then followed the super easy instructions on the Gardeners’ World website. You simply use 2 parts dry ingredients to 1 part fat. We only have vegetarian ingredients at the bakery so we used Veggie suet but you can use lard or regular suet. Rather than using old yoghurt pots we used little silicon cupcake moulds which looked incredibly cute.

Here’s a very easy summary:

– Place all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

– Melt the suet or lard in a pan.

– Allow to cool slightly, and then pour into the dry mixture. Stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

– Place in a container of your choice to set.
