Keeping our feathered friends well fed in the winter
Greetings from a very chilly Naish Farm. The bakery ovens are the most coveted space at Honeybuns at the moment. The warming aroma of baking cakes lifts the spirit on dark chilly mornings. The Honeybuns team are not alone in being drawn to the warmth at the bakery. The avian visitors at Naish Farm are probably the luckiest birds in Dorset.
Not every feathered friend tucks into artisan ingredients. The bird feeders here are topped up with the peanuts, pecans, seeds and raisins we use in our gluten free cakes and traybakes.
Making your own bird feeder is a great activity to occupy your little ones on rainy days.
We have an excess of apples from the Honeybuns orchard. A windfall is a perfect treat for garden birds. Or use one that’s been languishing in the fruit bowl. It’s easy to jazz it up into a gourmet delight for their beaks.
You will need an apple, a good handful of seeds of your choice, two sticks, and a length of string. Its probably best for a grown up to core the apple, next make an ‘x’ with the sticks. Tie them together with the string, sit the apple on top. Thread the string through the cored apple; lastly press the seeds into the apple. You can use you your artistic talents here and make an eye catching pattern with the seeds.
We love feeding our birds so much we have included a ‘Squash bird feeder’ idea in our Honeybuns All Day Cookbook, available from our website or from all good bookshops.-I couldn’t resist a shameless plug-that’s all for now, stay toasty you lovely lot!
