Super tasty, additive free, real tomato sauce recipe
Learn to make home made, free from foodie tomato sauce from scratch. This week we’re sharing two recipes for the price of one and both are free to all of our lovely readers by way of thanking you for your continued support. We do hope you enjoy making one or both of these gluten free savouries. These recipes celebrate the union of nutritionally charmed tomatoes and olive oil.
First we’ll show you how to create oven roasted tomatoes which can be enjoyed just as they are. We’ll then demonstrate how they can be used as the base for the second recipe, namely, a free from, home made pasta sauce.
As you enjoy the gorgeous kitchen aroma of caramalised tomatoes and fresh thyme, you can imagine you’re in your very own Tuscan villa. So a free holiday thrown in as well; what’s not to love?
Both recipes capture the sunshine flavours of summer in a Kilner jar, in readiness for Autumn.
Both recipes are vegan, gluten free and free from added sugar and are adapted from the Honeybuns All Day Cook Book.

How to make your ‘better than shop bought’ oven roasted tomatoes?
Here’s my method:
- Preheat oven to 100°C
- Put all the ingredients in a your baking tray and mix up using your hands or a wooden spoon.
- Pop tray of ingredients in the oven for 1 hour 30 minutes until the tomatoes shrink in their skins and start to caramelise at the edges.
- Leave to cool completely
- Place mixture in a sterilised, glass lidded jar (a Kilner jar or similar), adding extra olive oil to cover.
How to make your ‘better than shop bought’ tomato pasta sauce?
Here’s my method:
1. Pop the black onion seeds and mustard seeds in a saucepan on a medium heat. Dry fry for 2 minutes, crushing the seeds against the pan with the back of a wooden spoon. This releases the flavour.
2. Add the olive oil, onion and tomatoes to the pan. Fry for 4-5 minutes then add all the other ingredients and simmer on a low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
