Our top 5 gluten free Coronation party food ideas
The month of May here in the UK is going to be party time central with a fabulous three Bank holidays to enjoy. The crowning glory of these is the 8th May to celebrate King Charles’s coronation.
We’ve rounded up 5 of our favourite party time recipes in readiness. Our sweet and savoury nibbles are perfect if you are planning to put on a right royal spread for friends and family. As with everything we bake here at Honeybuns, each dish we mention is naturally gluten free and we’ve also catered for vegans and anyone lactose intolerant too.
To take the stress out of your party food preparations everything can be made and frozen ahead of time. We do use a lot of ground almonds in our recipes – you can always swap for sorghum flour or a milled seed like flax if you need to cater for nut free guests. We’ve got a fair amount of experience with various gluten free flours.

Tried and tested gluten free and vegan recipes
The following recipes are all adaptations of recipes we developed for our two Honeybuns cook books so we can hand on heart say they have well and truly been put through their paces. When we are holding picnics and tea parties here at the bakery we make all the food gluten free to avoid any issues of cross contamination. Every bite is just as delicious as regular non gluten free food – so guests will be none the wiser. Coeliacs can have full confidence that they can safely sample and enjoy every dish on the table.
Here are our top five quick and easy gluten free party piece recipes
1. A quick, one bowl gooey chocolate brownie that just so happens to be vegan, dairy free and gluten free. Truly fit for a King!
Top Party Food Tip: Why not turn this into an impressive dessert? Simply bake two of the tray bakes and sandwich together using home made vegan butter cream or vegan ice cream. You can then decorate the top of the brownie with molten dark chocolate (which acts as the glue) then place blueberries, raspberries/strawberries and mini white meringues in stripes on top for a red, white and blue flag effect?
All you need to make your vegan “butter cream” is:
- 250g sieved icing sugar
- 125g softened vegan “butter”
- the finely grated zest of one orange
- mini gluten free and vegan meringues are available from the London Apron brand.
2. For delicious and pretty gluten free cup cakes look no further than these rather regal Earl Grey beauties.
They are gluten free and dairy free. We have not yet tried them in a vegan version but it should be possible using cider vinegar and a plant milk instead of the egg. We’ll give this a whirl and update accordingly once we’ve tried it.
Freeze the baked cupcakes ahead and thaw on party day prior to popping fresh frosting on.
Top Party Food Tip: Try sprinkling freeze dried raspberry or cranberry pieces over the top of your cupcakes with some patriotically blue cornflowers. They look super pretty and really “pop” against the creamy whiteness of the frosting. For lovely natural sprinkles head over to Sous Chef for a great selection.
3. Our best selling gluten free and vegan chocolate caramel shortbread is a true crowd pleaser.
It serves 10 people easily once cut into squares. Our signature shortbread of polenta and ground almonds is so quick and easy to put together and really delivers in terms of flavour and texture.
Top Party Food Tip: To make a celebration cake stack of chocolate caramel squares find a pretty cake stand or make your own by placing a pretty plate on top of an up turned vintage china cup. Stack your cake squares up into a tower and then decorate with edible fresh flowers, molten chocolate drizzle and mini meringues. Short on time? Check out our gorgeous celebration cake stack kits available as gluten free, dairy free and vegan options.
4. Everyone loves a dip and this vegetarian one is a Honeybuns’ favourite
Try it with our seeded crackers for a nutritious and delicious combination. Vegetable crudités would work well with the dip too. Both the dip and the crackers can be frozen until you need them.
Top Party Food Tip: Decorate a bowl of dip with a sprinkling of ruby red pomegranate seeds and toasted pine nuts. Chopped fresh herbs also look pretty and add to the already moreish flavour.
5. In the run up to the coronation the country appears to have gone quite quiche crazy.
With the royally approved official coronation quiche being announced, the internet is now full to bursting with similar recipes. Our own favourite “go to” quiche celebrates early summer and the start of the much anticipated asparagus season. Naturally gluten free, this lovely savoury tart is delicious served hot or cold.

In the centre of the quiche create a little stack of fresh or roasted tomatoes along with some edible blue flowers such as violets. Or sprinkle the tomatoes with blue cornflowers.
