Emma Goss-Custard started Honeybuns in the late 1990s when she was a student trying to find a way to make some extra money. Using recipes handed down from her mother and grandmother, she lovingly made the cakes in her home and delivered them to local businesses and cafes on her old post office bike. In 2001 Emma relocated the business to Dorset, to a listed farm with outbuildings that have been sympathetically adapted to house the bakery. The company has grown organically and sustainably to fit its surroundings and Emma now runs the business with her husband Matt. The Honeybuns team is now around 26 people-strong, but the original kitchen table enterprise spirit still burns bright.

Baking isn’t the only thing Honeybuns are passionate about. Their homely pop-up gluten-free and veggie café, The Bee Shack, opens nine times a year attracting visitors from far and wide. All proceeds from the Bee Shack Café are used in Honeybuns’ BeeGreen project to help them to continue to improve their environment. The five acres surrounding the bakery are managed as a nature reserve and thanks to a new composting system and increased recycling, the bakery and production areas have almost zero waste to landfill.
